The GeoTREE Center (www.geotree.uni.edu) at the University of Northern Iowa received a NSF REU award to introduce young scientists to a highly interdisciplinary research environment with fundamental and applied research in hyperspectral imaging (HI). HI is widely used in various disciplines such as Earth Science, Environmental Science, Biology, Forestry, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, Geographic Information Science (GISc), and more. Are you a looking for hands-on remote sensing experience and an opportunity to grow professionally? Would you enjoy the chance to work with NASA using remote sensing to study important environmental issues that affect policy and management decision-making? Do you enjoy working in small teams to tackle tough technical challenges? If the answer to any of those questions is “yes,” then you may be a competitive candidate for a paid internship with NASA’s DEVELOP National Program. DEVELOP is a NASA Applied Sciences Program training and development internship where students utilize NASA and partner agency satellite data to conduct applied Earth Science research. Mentored by scientists from NASA and partner agencies, students conduct research projects that demonstrate to community leaders the application and importance of NASA science measurements and predictions in addressing policy issues. Typical internships last from eight to ten weeks. DEVELOP offices are located at several NASA facilities as well as regional and academic office locations across the United States. The NASA center locations are based at Langley Research Center (Virginia), Goddard Space Flight Center (Maryland), Marshall Space Flight Center (Alabama), Stennis Space Center (Mississippi), Ames Research Center (California), and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (California). The regional and academic offices are located at the Fort Collins Science Center (Colorado), Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative (Illinois), Mobile County Health Department (Alabama), Wise County and City of Norton Clerk of Court’s Office (Virginia), and Saint Louis University (Missouri). There is also an international team located at Monterrey Tech University in Monterrey, Mexico.

In order to apply to one of the DEVELOP centers at a NASA location, you must be a U.S. citizen, but U.S. citizenship is not an eligibility requirement at the regional or academic office locations. In order to apply for a DEVELOP internship, you must be a current high school, college, or graduate school student; possess at least a 3.0 GPA (cumulative or most recent semester); be at least 16 years of age; and have reliable transportation to and from the DEVELOP location. Internship stipends vary based upon current education level and classification in school. How to participate in the UN crowdsourcing opportunity

Exciting volunteer opportunity! Would you like to be a part of the UN crowdsourcing for manual imagery analysis in Somalia? The pilot project started at 12:00 (noon) EST on November 4th and will run through 12:00 (noon) EST on November 10th.

Here are three ways you can participate:

1. Join the Crisis Mappers Standby Task Force (SBTF) (http://blog.standbytaskforce.com/) and, once logged onto the SBTF site join the "satellite team" where you will find links and information about the current deployment. You can sign up to receive e-mail updates.

2. You can volunteer without joining the SBTF as well. The rule-set and workflow for the pilot are posted on this Google document: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1iTXqSw1xiEvsCtBf_QXR73ogXSxfisIwoIz8wONDP_A/edit?hl=en_US and the URL for the TomNod platform where the work will be done is http://mapper.tomnod.com/afgooye/.

3. Work with your ASPRS student chapter to organize a Crisis Mapping event (e.g. contact Chris Strother at UGA or Lawrence Jefferson at GMU) or use any existing student group framework that exists at your university (e.g. contact Nadia Hasham of Columbia University).

UN Volunteer Crowdsource Opportunity

The fighting and famine in Somalia have displaced enormous numbers of people in an area where access to the ground is very difficult. The UN needs reliable population estimates to begin the logistical planning for response: remote sensing is one way to achieve this.

The SAC is currently working with Shadrock Roberts (University of Georgia) and Patrick Meier (Director of Crisis Mapping for Ushahidi) to crowdsource the manual interpretation of imagery in Somalia for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.

Digital Globe is donating imagery which will be served out as small tiles in the free, easy-to-use Tomnod platform. Volunteers will follow a provided rule-set and try to identify as many structures as possible in a 5-day period. If you would like to help out the UN, you can contribute to the project in your ASPRS student chapter or as an individual! This project is expected to occur in early November.

New Student Chapter and Forum in the Potomac region

A new ASPRS Student Chapter and Forum in honor of Dr. Frederick Doyle at George Mason University (GMU) was initiated in December 2010. Following is an announcement from their group:

Northern Virginia and the broader Washington D.C. area is a locus of advances in remote sensing and geospatial sciences in the United States, and we at GMU are fortunate that there are many nearby government, corporate and academic institutions which are active in this field. We, the students of the Geography and Geoinformation Science Department at George Mason University, felt that it would be appropriate to establish an ASPRS student chapter at our university so that we may be more active participants in this exciting field.
The process of establishing the chapter/forum began in fall 2009 and by the start of fall 2010 all the necessary paperwork was ready for the new organization. We are grateful for the support and assistance we received from our faculty and the board of directors of the ASPRS Potomac Region.

Although we were officially recognized by the university in December, we had already begun our activities in September. We have held monthly meetings, and helped promote student attendance at the GeoTech conference organized by the ASPRS Potomac Region. We participated in the 2010 GIS Day at George Mason University with a booth promoting our organization, and we had several students sign up as new members. Currently, there are more than fifty student members participating in our Chapter/Forum.

Our plans for future activities include meetings, research seminars, technical tours, maintaining a wiki website, technical workshops, and networking with students and faculty from outside of our department and university who share the same interests. We are planning research seminars where graduate students and/or those who have already graduated may present their research, dissertation or thesis topic whether it is finished, in progress or in the idea stage. In addition to participating in the technical tours organized by the Potomac Region ASPRS, we plan to organize technical tours to nearby industries and government agencies. Technical tours are an exceptionally valuable opportunity for students to gain knowledge about their field of interest and to network with potential employers. We have created a wiki website where all our members can add valuable information about research interests, activities, data sources, and information that helps us all succeed in research and academia. Since many of the GMU student are employed full-time and commute to classes after their workday has ended, a wiki website is a valuable option for student and faculty to communicate with one another and share their common interests in research, academia and industry. We are in the beginning stages of creating this wiki site therefore all constructive ideas and information are welcome and highly appreciated. We always encourage new ideas that will enhance our organization.

National Geospatial Technology Skills Competition

Workshop on Advanced LiDAR Data Processing and Applications

Students and young professionals working with remote sensing, GIS and in related Geosciences fields are invited to participate in the 6th International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS) Student Consortium (SC) Summer School. The week long school will focus on LiDAR (aerial and terrestrial) and its applications.

NASA’s DEVELOP Summer 2011 Internship Program

NASA is pleased to annouce its DEVELOP Summer 2011 Internship Program for undergraduate and graduate students with an interest in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Remote Sensing, Computer Science, Earth Science, Natural Resource Management, Mathmatical Modeling, Geology, Biology, and Environmental Engineering. This is a paid 10-week internship program located at NASA Ames Research Center in Mountain View, California that begins June 6, 2011 (for semester system) or June 13 (for quarter system).

DEVELOP is a NASA Science Mission Directorate Applied Sciences Program that fosters human capital development to extend science research to local communities. Student teams research NASA science capabilities relevant to community concerns, create and complete projects using remote sensing and GIS techniques, and create advanced computer generated visualizations demonstrating research results. The activities are student-led, with mentors from NASA and partner organizations.

A stipend will be provided for selected students. Housing for students coming from outside the area will be provided and is located near the DEVELOP facilities, with accessible public transportation. The Program also covers per diem and other travel costs for fieldwork conducted during the Program. Applications must be postmarked by Monday February 28, 2011. Interviews will be conducted shortly after applications are received. Students selected for a summer 2011 DEVELOP internship will be notified by late April.

Recreating Remote Sensing Technology

Sometimes in order to understand lectures from the classroom, you have to get outside and apply the theories. That is what a group of junior undergraduates did in their remote sensing course at SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse, New York. A design made up of a helium weather balloon attached to a protected digital camera and cell-phone with GPS capabilities was lifted more than 80,000ft (24,000m) above the earth with a maximum horizontal speed of 120 mph (190 km/h). The camera was set to automatically take pictures of the earth, and the trajectory was mapped using the cell-phone; the sensor traveled from Syracuse to Poughkeepsie, NY (a distance of about 150 miles/240km). This project shows that behind all of the technology we are exploring, there is a way to (relatively) reproduce the process. I hope this keeps you down to earth... or not.

Wednesday, July 21: Oil and Gas Production, presented by Lorraine Tighe of Intermap and Brian Thompson of New Century Software, will explain how digital elevation data and images are used in this critical energy market.

Tuesday, August 3: Web Services, presented by Rick Eagle, Josh Parker, and Kevin Thomas of Intermap, will examine the many ways in which geospatial data is delivered and used online.

3S 2010 (International SUMMER STUDENT SEMINAR)

The International Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS) and the Siberian State Academy of Geodesy would like to welcome participants to the “3S 2010” - International SUMMER STUDENT SEMINAR Novosibirsk, Russia, 21- 25 September, 2010.

The aim of the Seminar is the intensification of international and youth scientific contacts focusing on geo-sciences issues. The program of the 3S has been designed to give visitors the maximum opportunity to enjoy attractions of Novosibirsk, as well as providing a rich cultural and technical program.

The 3S will cover aspects of Remote Sensing, Photogrammetry and Spatial Information Sciences related to disaster management. This five days seminar is a joint project of ISPRS, SSGA, MIIGAiK and WU as a combined international students event that will be a part of the INTERRA seminar and conference supported by the administration of the Novosibirsk region.

The program of the “3S 2010” includes:

Volunteering at the ASPRS 2010 Annual conference in San Diego, CA

Eighteen students from many different universities and backgrounds were selected to volunteer at the ASPRS annual conference at San Diego, CA. The volunteering tasks ranged from assisting at the registration desk to helping session moderators. However, the benefits of volunteering far outweighed the time spent doing these tasks. First, the registration fees were waived for each volunteer and student assistants were given lodging and a small stipend. Second, it was a great opportunity for volunteers to learn about the geospatial field, network and showcase themselves to their potential employers, and meet and catch-up with new and old friends ;)

Finally and most importantly, volunteers had a great time sightseeing and eating at some hand selected San Diego attractions led by Boris Skopljak (Networking Councilor for the Student Advisory Council) and his team.

Also, Rose Kearney (Chair), Meghan Graham (Deputy Chair), and Lisa Wedding (Educational Development Councilor) organized sessions specifically designed for student learning needs such as: Student and Employer “Meet and Greet”, Speed Networking, Exhibit Hall Guided Tour, and Academic Publishing. Other student sessions were organized to get feedback on how Student Advisory Council (SAC) and ASPRS can best help the student community.

This post would be incomplete without talking about the venue. The Town and Country resort and convention center offered a great place for the ASPRS conference. Different session halls were spread across the property, which meant attendees had to walk a little bit between sessions, but wait, it was great strolling across the paths with beautiful roses of different colors/varieties growing everywhere around the center.

Many individuals worked in the background to ensure that the volunteers were organized and had a fun experience. It would be hard to name everyone in this blog post, so a big THANK YOU to all. Special “thumbs up” to Dr. Rakesh Malhotra (Student Volunteer Coordinator) and Dr. Doug Stow (Conference Co-chair) for keeping volunteers on track for their duties and arranging for breakfasts :). Kim Tilley (Associate Executive Director) ensured that we kept our balance between fun and performing volunteering duties (for which we were there!) : )

11th International Circumpolar Remote Sensing Symposium

The 11th International Circumpolar Remote Sensing Symposium(http://alaska.usgs.gov/science/geography/CRSS2010/) will be held in September 2010 at Cambridge's Scott Polar Research Institute. Prior to the conference (Monday, 20 September 2010), there will be a one day UK Polar Network Workshop on Circumpolar Remote Sensing.

The conference deals specifically with remote sensing applications in the polar environments, both Arctic and Antarctic. It will provide an international forum for the discussion of work currently being carried out in the circumpolar regions. Topics that have been discussed at previous CRSS meetings have included environmental monitoring, the cryosphere, resource prospecting, vegetation measurement, LiDAR, RADARSAT, polar GIS applications, and many others. The deadline for abstract submission is 31 May, 2010.

Prior to the conference, the UKPN Workshop is directed at graduate students and other early career researchers. Sessions in development include Open source remote sensing and GIS, Imaging climate change, and Innovating new techniques; suggestions from potential participants are encouraged. The day will also feature a career mentoring panel and will culminate with the CRSS Icebreaker Reception.

In the discussions of Cap and Trade, Stimulus Packages and Health Care, a bill snuck through the political system with great relevance to the ASPRS community.

H.R. 2489 is a bill "to authorize a national cooperative geospatial imagery program through the United States Geological Survey to promote use of remote sensing data." It is sponsored by Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin (SD) and was first introduced back in May 2009. Last week (Oct. 27 to be exact), it was passed by the House of Representatives 379-33. Now it sits in the Senate awaiting discussion, editing and passage.

Geography Awareness Week/GIS Day 2009 Poster Competition

To promote the awareness of geography to the public during the nation-wide Geography Awareness Week (Nov. 15 – 21, 2009) and GIS Day (Nov. 18, 2009), a poster competition has been organized by the Department of Geology/Geography at Northwest Missouri State University. Anyone interested in sharing their geography experiences and knowledge is encouraged to participate and submit a poster. The subject of your poster should be geography related, such as Geographic Information Systems, remote sensing, Global Positioning System, cartography, physical geography, human geography, or regional geography.

Electronic submissions should be sent to Dr. Eva Wu through e-mail or postal service to the address listed below. Submissions must be received by Monday, Nov. 9, 2009 in order to be considered. Your poster should be a maximum 34” X 45” in size, preferably in Microsoft PowerPoint format, and must include your name and contact information. You should also indicate which group you are eligible for: Student Group (for individuals who are undergraduate students) or Professional Group (for individuals who are graduate students or working professionals). Manual of Geographic Information Systems soon. We are looking for Graduate students who would be interested in reviewing a section of this manual and providing a written review for publication in PE&RS.

Please click here to take a look at the Table of Contents. There are eight sections in this manual, each containing multiple chapters. You will be required to review one section in about a month's time, beginning in mid June, and provide a written review. The State Universtiy of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry is currently accepting applications for M.Sc., Ph.D. and Postdoctoral positions in the Intelligent Geocomputing Laboratory of the Department of Environmental Resources and Forest Engineering located in Syracuse, NY. We are seeking applicants with a strong quantitative background who are interested in performing research in Remote Sensing, Geographic Information Science and Artificial Intelligence. Our lab supports interdisciplinary work including the fields of computer science, electrical engineering, ecological-environmental engineering and biology, therefore applicants with diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

Recent projects comprise of land use change monitoring using satellite imagery, urban sprawl models, spatiotemporal analyses of animal-vehical collisons and of deer movements, forest change models, spatiotemporal socioeconomic models, human cognition and spatiotemporal relationships. Research in the Intelligent Geocomputing Laboratory is funded by several NASA, NSF and EPA projects and selected applicants will be offered competitive research assistantships. Our Department also offers several teaching positions with tuition waivers and stipends. The ASPRS 2009 National Conference committee is looking for Student Volunteers to help from Sunday, March 8 – Friday, March 13, 2009. In exchange for the opportunity to attend the General and Technical Sessions, visit the Exhibit Hall, and enjoy the Exhibitor's Reception, Student Volunteers will be required to work at least 8 hours during the conference.

This is a great opportunity to learn more about the geospatial field, meet some of the top names in the industry, and explore job possibilities; you are encouraged to bring your resumé as a special area will be set aside for resumé postings. In addition, the ASPRS Student Advisory Council will host myriad events targeting the special interests of students and young professionals including: Speed Networking, an Exhibit Hall Guided Tour, and a new track of special sessions.

PROVISIONAL CERTIFICATION PROGRAM

An applicant seeking Provisional Certification must be an active student preparing to graduate with educational training in the spatial sciences from an approved institution of higher education, and must follow the Basic Requirements as previously outlined for Certified Photogrammetrist, Mapping Scientist, or Technologist; the exception being the required on-job experience. Applicants must submit the appropriate Application and Fee with one (1) reference from their academic advisor or relevant faculty member. An Official Copy of the applicant’s current transcript must accompany the application; the transcript must validate that the applicant has successfully completed a minimum of two (2) courses in the spatial sciences (photogrammetry, remote sensing, or GIS/LIS). The application requires a declaration of compliance with the ASPRS Code of Ethics.

Upon successful examination completion, the individual will receive Provisional Certification (ASPRS) status. In the case of Certified Photogrammetrist or Certified Mapping Scientist, the individual will have ten (10) years from the date of examination to complete the six (6) year experience requirement. In the case of Certified Technologist, the individual will have five (5) years to complete the three (3) year experience requirement. Exceptions to the length of time for completion of the experience requirement will only be granted for active duty military service.

When the Work Experience requirement is complete, the Applicant must provide written documentation and three (3) references to ASPRS Headquarters, who will forward the experience summary and references to the Evaluation for Certification Committee. Applicants meeting all of these requirements will become certified for the specified time period of their certification.

HOW TO APPLY

Persons interested in applying for certification, recertification, or provisional certification should follow this general procedure:

Step 1: Read carefully the section entitled "Classification Chart for Photogrammetry and Mapping Sciences."

Step 2: Determine separately the number of years of actual job experience attained in functions that are classified as being at the professional level, and in functions at the technician level.

Step 3: Read the preceding sections ("Basic Requirements" and "Educational Credit"); ascertain that actual work experience, with or without educational credit, meets conditions listed under "Basic Requirements."

Step 4: If applying for initial certification, download an application for Certified Photogrammetrist/Mapping Scientist OR Certified Technologist and reference forms or contact ASPRS Headquarters: send an email to certification@asprs.org or call (301) 493-0290, ext 101 or fax your request to (301) 493-0208.

Step 5: If applying for recertification, read carefully the Section on "Recertification Criteria" and be sure to complete the Application for Recertification and the reference forms. NOTE: When describing experience, applicants are advised to be complete. The Evaluation Committee evaluates the application data and does not assume data not presented)

Step 6: Provide names and addresses of at least four persons to whom you have sent a copy of the Confidential Reference Form. Fill out the Confidential Reference Forms with the person’s name and complete address on the top left side and forward to the respective references. Request said references to supply, from their own personal knowledge, facts with reference to your character and information concerning your professional qualifications, and to mail the completed reference form, with their name, address, and any accompanying letters to the Society. (Please note: Provisional Certification applications are subject to modified requirements.) (NOTE: References are often the source of delays in the evaluation process. The process cannot start until the references have all been received.)

The ASPRS Foundation has just announced the JOHN O. BEHRENS Institute for Land Information MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP. The purpose of the Award is to encourage students/persons who have an exceptional interest in pursuing scientific research or education in geospatial science or technology or land information systems/records to enter a professional field where they can use the knowledge of this discipline to excel in their profession. Initially, this annual scholarship will consist of a certificate and a check in the amount of $1,000 and a one-year student membership (new or renewal) in the Society.

The Scholarship is made to an under-graduate student currently enrolled or intending to enroll in a college or university in the United States for the purpose of pursuing a program of study that prepares them to enter a profession in which education in geospatial science or land information disciplines will advance the value of those disciplines within that profession.

The AAG Remote Sensing Specialty Group (RSSG) is pleased to announce the 2009 RSSG Student Honors Paper Competition and RSSG/GISSG/Cartography SG Illustrated Paper Competition to be held at the annual meeting in Las Vegas, March 22-27, 2009. Students at all academic levels are invited to submit original research on all topics in the field of remote sensing to the Honors Paper competition and are invited to submit illustrated papers that advance any aspect of remote sensing, GIS, or cartography.

MAPPS (www.mapps.org), a national association of private firms engaged in mapping, photogrammetry, GIS and other geospatial activities, headquartered in Reston, VA, is seeking a student for an internship for Summer 2008. The MAPPS internship program is designed to provide a student with substantive experience in the geospatial field, particularly with regard to the private sector, association management, and public policy.

The intern will primarily research and write articles for MAPPS, its publications and its website, and participate in other projects as assigned. Responsibilities will include developing textual, graphical and image content for the MAPPS web site.

Because the intern will spend much of his/her time writing, MAPPS is looking for a prospective intern who has excellent writing skills. While a prospective intern is not required to have a specific academic major, coursework in GIS-related topics is desirable. We are looking for an independent, self-starting, hard-working student who has a genuine interest in the geospatial field. Knowledge of web design and HTML development is requested.

The internship position is available on a full-time or part-time basis during the summer of 2008. The internship duration and work schedule is flexible and negotiable, and we are willing to accommodate a student’s academic schedules. A stipend is provided. The internship is located at the MAPPS office in Reston Town Center, Reston, VA.

GIS Day @ KU

The ASPRS Student Chapter at the University of Kansas, the Mount Oread Geospatial Technologies Club, focuses nearly all of its efforts on our annual GIS Day @ KU celebration. This year marked our seventh annual GIS Day @ KU and each year the event has been better organized, better attended, and more useful to undergraduate and graduate students. The GIS Day Planning Committee is chaired by a graduate student and composed of several undergraduate and graduate volunteers as well as several professors who serve as advisers. Several dedicated university employees also contribute to the committee. We collected funds from various departments and programs across campus who utilize GIS in their research or classrooms. This year, donating departments consisted of the Department of Geography, the Kansas Biological Survey, the Data Access and Support Center (DASC) of the Kansas Geospatial Community Commons, the Institute for Policy and Social Research, the KU Libraries, the KU Transportation Institute, the KU Biodiversity Institute, and the Center for the Remote Sensing of Ice Sheets (CReSIS). The Coca Cola company, via a contractual relationship with the university, also donated money and beverages. Most of these are repeat donors who support GIS Day @ KU every year. We also benefit from a close association with the Kansas GIS Policy Board, which allows us, among other things, to send emails to many state and local GIS agencies and government groups.

In the early stages of planning, we select a theme for our GIS Day. This year we focused on open-source and web-based GIS applications. We select guest speakers based on their expertise and knowledge of the theme. We also sponsor a student GIS presentation competition where students from KU and other schools (this year we had students from Haskell Indian Nations University and Baker University) are able to present their research. About half of participants come from outside of geography departments. Prizes this year were $250, $150 and $100 for first, second and third places.

GIS Day @ KU is a big deal. This year, we had 196 people pre-register. Due to the hard work and programming expertise of Xan Wedel, of the Institute for Policy and Social Research at KU, registrants entered their information on our event website and their location appeared on a mashup of Google Maps. Attendees were plotted based on whether they were from academia, private business, government, non-profit or if they were a guest speaker. You can see the map here. A Google Maps mashup was also used to direct attendees from the parking lot to the event, as seen here.

When attendees arrived, they were greeted by a group of student volunteers who issued them a preprinted name tag and provided them with an agenda of the day's events. They were then directed to a parlor, which contained the Information and Job Fair as well as coffee, juice, bagels and pastries. This is the first year that we have organized an Information and Job Fair. Not only did the Fair allow students to meet with local and national GIS related businesses and share their resumes, it also helped us cover the costs of GIS Day @ KU since participating agencies were charged a nominal fee. At 9:00 a.m. Joshua Campbell, geography graduate student and this year's planning committee chair, started GIS Day @ KU with some opening remarks. After his brief introduction participants listened to talks from Goeff Zeiss, Director of Technology at Autodesk; Brian Timoney, Founder of the Timoney Group; Andrew Turner, Founder of Mapufacture and author of 'Introduction to Neogeography'; and Jeremy Bartley, ArcGIS Server Developer Team, ESRI. The presentations of all of these speakers are available on our website. The planning committee has worked with various departments and programs on campus throughout the history of GIS Day @ KU and through their generous support, we were able to cover the airfares, hotel expenses, and food costs of all of our guest speakers.

Following these speakers, we broke for lunch. Then, from 1:00 - 2:30 p.m., attendees watched the Student Research Presentation Competition. This consisted of 8 student presentations about their own research. Presentations were limited to 8 minutes with a 2 minute question and answer period. A list of this years' winners, and all of the student presentations, are available on our competition website found at the link above.

After the student competition, we listened to presentations by Aimee Stewart, Systems Programmer at the KU Biodiversity Institute; Professor Nathaniel Brunsell, professor in Atmospheric Studies and Geography at KU; and Jude Kastens, Research Assistant at the Kansas Applied Remote Sensing (KARS) program. Their presentations are also available on the GIS Day @ KU website. The formal event ended around 5:00 p.m. but the celebration continued at Free State Brewing Company.

GIS Day @ KU has been a great way to unite the local GIS community and increase awareness of GIS in university departments other than geography. It has also served to mentor undergraduate students by developing working relationships between them and graduate students. This relationship helps to ensure continuity of GIS Day @ KU planning into the future. Our event started small, but has had continued support and has grown to a nearly $5,000 event with over 200 participants. One great benefit to this years' event was listening to speakers talk about the future of GIS web-based applications. Many of these speakers made suggestions to faculty regarding changes to class offerings that would better prepare students for the workplace. During Geography Week, the KU GeoClub sponsors a Globe-O-Mania Trivia Bowl, which is also a great idea for an ASPRS student chapter interested in increasing geography awareness at their university.

Signatures - ASPRS' New Student Blog

At the ASPRS Annual Conference in Tampa Florida, the Student Advisory Council (SAC) discussed a new format for the student newsletter. During their discussion, they proposed an online format rather than a PDF or print format in order to take advantage of the adaptability of the electronic media which includes RSS subscriptions and links to other sites that hold additional information.

With this information, we decided to change the ASPRS Student Newsletter from a PDF format to a blog. With the creation of this blog, we will be able to post content on a consistent basis rather than the quarterly schedule of the PDF version.

ASPRS Student Profile - Jonathan Thayn

I grew up in a small coal-mining community in southeastern Utah, half way between the San Rafael Desert and the Bookcliff Mountains. We lived outside of town, on my grandpa’s farm, so until I received my driver’s license, our access to movies and malls was limited. My brothers and sisters and I spent a lot of time outside, hiking through the sagebrush and Juniper trees near our home. My dad and my brothers and I were involved in boy scouting so we did a lot of camping together. I really enjoyed being outside, especially in the mountains, where it was oddly calming and exciting at the same time. When I wasn’t outside, I was usually drawing or painting. It was a happy day when I realized I could combine my interests in art and the outdoors by making remotely sensed images to model and map vegetation.

After high school, I attended the College of Eastern Utah in my hometown for four years. For two of those years I lived in western Guatemala as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. I received my bachelor degree in GIS from Brigham Young University and my master’s degree in Public Administration from the same university. My wife and I then moved to Lake Forest, a few miles north of Chicago. After working there for two years, we moved to Lawrence, Kansas so I could pursue a doctoral degree in geography and remote sensing. My goal is to work as a professor and scientist at a research university.

I am particularly interested in studying vegetation and ecosystem response to perturbation and possible climate change. My research so far has focused on analyzing time-series of satellite image vegetation indices to extract phenology metrics, or information regarding the seasonal timing of vegetation growth cycles. I have used aspects of this methodology to map red cedar invasion in the Great Plains and to model the effects of rangeland fragmentation on cattle stocking rates in Kansas. My dissertation research looks to map prehistoric anthropogenic soils in the Amazon Basin using vegetation response to drought conditions as a surrogate for soil type. The most exciting aspect of this work is that the result will be a map of pre-Columbian settlement sites that have been abandoned and reabsorbed by the forest.

After work, I go home to my family. My wife, Debbi, is busy taking care of our two daughters and our Beagle puppy. Currently, this involves swimming lessons and coordinating various play-groups. Mary (4-years) likes dancing, chocolate, going on expeditions, and the color pink. Lucy (2-years) likes the Bernstain Bears, juice, reading stories, and doing whatever Mary is doing.

My goals as Communications Councilor for the ASPRS Student Advisory Council (SAC) are to make the communication between members as useful as possible. First off, I would like to give the newsletter, Signatures, a blog-like online format so that we can subscribe to it using RSS. That way each member can find the articles, suggestions, information, etc. in the newsletter without having to wade through the stuff that isn’t as interesting to them. Also, comments, suggestions and questions can be posted to the articles so that readers can communicate with the authors. I think this has a lot of potential for articles that highlight chapter success stories. Leaders from other chapters would be able to easily ask questions and the authors would be able to respond. During the SAC meeting at the ASPRS conference in Tampa, we brainstormed possible features or sections for the newsletter (the minutes from that meeting are on the Yahoo! Users Group (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/asprs_students/message/40). I am especially excited about the grant and scholarship notice board and the collaborative research suggestions. I am looking into ways to implement those as soon as possible. If you have any additional suggestions or ideas, please let me know.

ASPRS Students - Member Recruiting and Retention

Michelle Kinzel, ASPRS student member and Chapter President the Oregon State University Student Chapter, highlights the benefits of joining a student chapter within the organization. As the OSU chapter president, Michelle’s continues to promote student growth within her chapter and encourages all students to create their own chapter.

The Oregon State University Student Chapter of the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing has been successful at building a strong student membership during the 2006-2007 academic year. I have worked with the faculty advisor Dr. Michael Wing to schedule meetings and recruitment events in the Geosciences and Forestry Departments. The key factors in recruiting nearly 25 new members since last fall have been spreading the word wide and far, engaging officers in key projects and activities, and providing interesting and stimulating meeting events. Initially, the interest was sparked by advertising the special student membership rate being sponsored by the ASPRS association. Many students were keenly interested in participating in a professional society for only $10, a reasonable chunk out of even a student’s tight budget (The initial cost for student membership is $45, but most Chapters will pay a portion of the dues to promote student growth). Announcements were made via email and in courses related to Cartography, Remote Sensing and GIS around campus. Interest quickly grew and students joined the chapter at hosted luncheons and chapter meetings.

The main factors in continuing the success of the chapter have been the participation of the members and the chapter officers, hosting of social events, and creation of a listserv and website that serve as communication hubs. Our chapter treasurer, Julien Deveraux has begun a project to use GPS technology to map out the distribution of all the tree species on the OSU Campus. Richard Hughes is teaming up with chapter Vice President Sam Thomas to create a Bike Map of Corvallis for 2-wheel commuters and weekend warriors. One of the Spring Meetings will actually be at a secret location, and members will have to use GPS units and aerial photos of campus to decode clues and geo-cache their way to the location, where the fastest teams will be rewarded with prizes and all participants will enjoy a catered lunch. Rob Denner has created a chapter website, and has begun inviting speakers to attend the meetings to give presentations on the latest and greatest applications in Remote Sensing and Photogrammetry. We are also working on creating chapter t-shirts, a great way to encourage pride in the organization.

For anyone interested in starting a new chapter or building interest in an existing chapter, we recommend the following tips for finding and keeping members:

1. Announce the student membership offer via email, flyers posted around buildings and in classes. Use listservs, professors and students themselves to get the word out among related disciplines such as Geosciences, Oceanography, Forestry.

2. Have the forms for joining on hand to distribute with the announcement, both electronically and at face-to-face announcements.

3. Host meeting times and offer free lunch (always a big hit) and engaging activities.

4. Make if fun and social! Our meetings are scheduled around speakers, BBQ socials and chapter outings.

5. Appoint officers and encourage members to organize and lead a project.

Photogrammetry Shaped my Future - Perminder Singh Malik

Recently, Perminder Singh Malik, an ASPRS student member (pictured on the right), shared his insight on having a career in photogrammetry and how it has shaped his future. Check it out:

I was just a CAD operator, a guy with a Civil Engineering background, when I started my career in the field of Photogrammetry in 1998. I was just learning about the concept of Photogrammetry due to my engineering background because, at the time, it was not a common field in India. Fortunately, I began training in this field with such good analogue machines as A8 and Amh1 on which you clearly understand the concept of parallax and parameters like kappa, phi, and omega. Now, I have found that it is a world of digital mapping and to grow one must stay abreast of the latest technologies.

I give credit to my company, Kampsax India Pvt. Ltd. (a division of COWI A/S, Denmark, which is a quite well known name in this field), as it changed my base from CAD to geospatial science. I joined this company in 1998 when it started its Photogrammetric unit in India. It has been a long run of more than nine years from a CAD Operator to a Technical Expert position, but I am quite satisfied with my career. Currently, I focus on Quality Assurance and Project leading with digital systems.
