ASPRS/CaGIS/GLIS Free On-line Seminar

FREE ON-LINE SEMINAR
3D Indoor Modeling for Navigation
Sponsored by ASPRS, CaGIS and GLIS

Date & Time: May 3, 2013 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM EST

The American Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ASPRS) GIS Division in partnership with the Cartography and Geographic Information Society (CaGIS) and the Geographic and Land Information Society (GLIS) would like to invite our members to attend our second seminar in a series for 2013.

Abstract: Indoor space differs significantly from outdoor. The indoor movement is complicated by existence of corridors, stairs, doors, elevators, etc. Therefore the models (geometric, topological, cellular, etc.) developed for outdoor navigation are not readily appropriate for indoor use. This seminar will elaborate on the most prominent 3D indoor models, CityGML and IFC, the options to extract 3D networks from such models considering a specific locomotion mode and will present some approaches for path finding and guidance considering dynamic and static obstacles. The recent developments within IndoorGML (a new OGC standard for exchange of indoor network models) will be discussed as well.

About the Speaker: Dr. Sisi Zlatanova is an associate professor and the leader of the theme group ‘Geo-information for Crisis Response’ at the GIS Technology section, OTB research Institute for the Built Environment, Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands. She is the chair of the ISPRS WG IV/7 3D indoor modeling and navigation (2012-2016), a member of the OGC drafting team IndoorGML and a member of the SC of IRDR (2011-2014). Her research interests are in 3D geo-information: modeling, structuring, analysis and visualization. Since several years her focus is on 3D indoor modeling and path computation.

On-line Registration:
https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/3942869937630108928

NOTE: Registration is limited to the first 95 people who sign up and log in to the seminar.

Crowd-Sourcing the National Map: Using Volunteers for Enhanced Data Collection

Please see the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) news item at http://www.usgs.gov/newsroom/article_pf.asp?ID=3545  for information about of the National Map effort to explore crowd-sourced or volunteered geographic information for updates for selected building and structures. This effort is now expanding to 18 states, including Michigan and Ohio.

Crowd-Sourcing the Nation: Using Volunteers for Enhanced Data Collection
This program, known as The National Map Corps, focuses on encouraging citizens to collect data relating to structures by both adding new features and/or correcting existing data within The National Map database.

The USGS is expanding the involvement of volunteers to enhance data collection about structures for The National Map.

This program, known as The National Map Corps, focuses on encouraging citizens to collect data relating to structures by both adding new features and/or correcting existing data within The National Map database. These structures can include schools, hospitals, post offices, police stations and other important public places.

Collaborative pilot projects in Colorado were recently used to test the concept of crowd-sourcing.
While some familiarity with the area that a volunteer chooses is helpful, one doesn’t have to live near a particular place to contribute. The tools on TNMC website, along with ancillary information available on the Internet, are generally sufficient to edit a distant area.

Becoming a volunteer for TNMC is easy; go to http://nationalmap.gov/TheNationalMapCorps/index.html  to learn more and to sign up as a volunteer.

GISCUP 2013

CFP: GISCUP 2013, co-located with ACM SIGSPATIAL GIS 2013 - CALL FOR CONTEST PARTICIPATION

February 08, 2013 -- ACM SIGSPATIAL is organizing an algorithm contest with winners to be announced at the ACM SIGSPATIAL GIS conference in November 2013 ( http://dmlab.cs.umn.edu/GISCUP2013). The contest will be about geo-fencing, which represents a virtual perimeter for a real-world geographic area. Geo-fencing is used widely in location-based services, e.g., location-based advertisements (which send the targeted ads to the users when they are close to the shopping mall) and child location services (which notify parents when a child leaves a designated area).

For the contest, each team will be given access to a large amount of point locations and spatial polygons along with some spatial predicates. We want to find every (point, polygon) pair in the dataset that satisfies the spatial predicate. The submitted programs will be evaluated by the contest organizers on multiple datasets and will be ranked quantitatively based on their correctness and speed.

The first place team will receive US$ 500. Second place will receive US$ 400. Third place will receive US$ 300. In addition to the prizes, the top three teams will be invited to submit a four page paper for a contest paper session to be held at the 2013 ACM SIGSPATIAL GIS conference. These papers will be subject to review and acceptance by the contest organizers, but it is expected that each of the top three teams will have their paper in the conference proceedings, a ten-minute presentation in the contest session, and a poster presentation in the conference's regular poster session. At least one team member of each winning team must register for the ACM SIGSPATIAL GIS conference.

Submissions are due August 1st, 2013 at 17:00 PST. See http://dmlab.cs.umn.edu/GISCUP2013 for more details, including detailed problem definition and sample data set for testing.
