Open PhD position: Proximal and remote sensing for soil property mapping (PMSoil-2013-02)
Within the Swiss National Research Programme NRP 68 (Sustainable Use of Soil as a Resource a PhD position within the approved project ‘Predictive mapping of soil properties for the evaluation of soil functions at regional scale’ (PMSoil) is available. The aim of PMSoil is to create large-scale soil-property maps for three pilot study regions (areas 102–103 km2), to develop a validated system of pedotransfer functions for Swiss soils, and to apply them in the study regions to address stakeholders’ issues. This requires, that we also develop procedures and protocols for harmonizing legacy soil data.
We therefore invite applications for a PhD position in the area of proximal and remote sensing for soil-property mapping.
The remote-sensing component of the project is threefold. First, acquisition and processing of proximal and air- and space-borne data within the pilot study areas using solar reflective imaging spectroscopy and gamma ray spectroscopy is envisaged. Second, spatially non-contiguous soil property maps are derived – as well as vegetated land cover, biochemical and biophysical variables. Geostatistical approaches will be used in combination with different observational approaches to produce ‘gap-free’ soil property maps. Field work will be required to validate those maps. Last, upscaling approaches will be used to scale sparse, but high spatial resolution data to the typical process length scales of soil properties changes using medium-resolution satellite time series. The successful applicant will be based in Zurich and working for at University of Zurich (UZH – http://isprs-sc.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1d15152c7ac07acf40e1c5423&id=6309a6dc25&e=550a1158e9). Supervision will be through Michael Schaepman, Rogier de Jong (UZH) and Andreas Papritz (ETH).
Upon start, applicants must have a completed masters degree in (Environmental) Physics, Environmental Science, Soil Science, Geostatistics or Geography, preferably with a certain degree of specialization in remote sensing of soils or using technologies such as gamma or imaging spectroscopy. Applicants must be able to pursue data-oriented computational research as well as experimental approaches and fieldwork. Good numerical skills and literacy in programming is an asset. A good standard of written and spoken English is required. The position may start as of June 1, 2013 (or as soon as possible thereafter) and is limited to 3+1 years. Salaries correspond to the Swiss National Science Foundation regulations of PhD salaries.
We are looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic and independent person with a passion for quantitative science to join our team. We offer outstanding working conditions, a high quality of life in Zurich, and an excellent supporting environment.
Please send your application (including position reference ‘PMSoil-2013-02’) as one single PDF file (motivation letter, complete CV, and names of 2 references) to Rita.Ott@geo.uzh.ch, no later than March 25, 2013. For further questions, please contact Michael.Schaepman@geo.uzh.ch.

Open PhD position: Remote sensing of land cover / land use change for soil monitoring (iMSoil-2013-01)
Within the Swiss National Research Programme NRP 68 (Sustainable Use of Soil as a Resource), we are looking to fill a PhD position within the approved project ‘Integrated modelling framework to monitor and predict trends of agricultural management and their impact on soil functions at multiple scales’ (iMSoil). The aim of iMSoil is to develop and implement an integrated modeling framework as an extended soil monitoring tool for soil nutrients and pollutants in Switzerland. This enables detection and prediction of trends in land use change, agricultural management and their impact on soil functions at multiple scales.
We therefore invite applications for a PhD position in the area of remote sensing of land-cover / land-use change for soil monitoring.
The remote sensing component of the project quantifies land-cover and land-use change in Switzerland. It uses combined and integrated approaches based on spatial, temporal and spectral observations to physically assess quantitative changes of relevant soils. The results will be used in an integrated modelling framework to improve the spatial and temporal accuracy of model predictions for nutrients and pollutant cycling in Swiss agro-ecosystems and soils.
The successful applicant will be based in Zurich and working for both, the University of Zurich (UZH – http://isprs-sc.us2.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=1d15152c7ac07acf40e1c5423&id=329a08df65&e=550a1158e9) and Agroscope Reckenholz-Tänikon Research Station (ART – http://isprs-sc.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1d15152c7ac07acf40e1c5423&id=d9258f6787&e=550a1158e9). Supervision will be through Michael Schaepman, Rogier de Jong (UZH) and Armin Keller (ART).
Upon start, applicants must have a completed masters degree in (Environmental) Physics, Environmental Science, Soil Science, or Geography, preferably with a certain degree of specialization in remote sensing of land cover change or using physically based remote sensing approaches. Applicants must be able to pursue data-oriented computational research as well as experimental approaches and fieldwork to validate model predictions. Good numerical skills and literacy in programming is an asset. A good standard of written and spoken English is required. The position may start as of May 1, 2013 (or as soon as possible thereafter) and is limited to 3+1 years.
Please send your application (including position reference ‘iMSoil-2013-01’) as one single PDF file (motivation letter, complete CV, and names of 2 references) to Rita.Ott@geo.uzh.ch, no later than March 25, 2013. For further questions, please contact Michael.Schaepman@geo.uzh.ch.

Introduction to HOT/OSM for SBTF 2013
We, in the Geolocation Team, are excited to announce a joint SBTF/HOT training session on 16 March at 20:00 GMT. This will be both a general introduction to OSM itself (including editing) & the HOT Team.
Time: March 16, 2013 from 8pm to 10pm
Location: Online
Organized By: Geolocation Team
Event Description:
Introduction to Open Street Map (OSM) techniques and the work of the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT).
20:00-22:00 GMT/15:00-17:00 EST/11:00-13:00 PST
More details to come, but this will be a two-hour introduction to OSM in general, also to the very impressive work of the HOT team, one of our key partners. We will also cover some editing techniques, including with Potlatch.
For those who attended our OSM 101 course in 2011, there should be significant updates from that time.
See more details and RSVP on Standby Task Force.
